2018 is Our 21st Season of WFoL Summer Concerts
One of the real pleasures of the season is to listen to live music outdoors on a balmy summer evening. Winters Friends of the Library invites everyone to enjoy the 21st season of free Summer Concerts at the Gazebo on Thursday evenings in July, 7:00–8:30 p.m. at the Rotary Park Gazebo, Main Street at Railroad Avenue in Winters.
The series will kick off on July 5 with Mike Blanchard and the Californios, playing traditional Country and Western and unabashedly proud of their California roots. The band plays an Americana grab bag with a mix of originals, gospel, and honky tonk, as well as covers of their favorite artists, both old and new. Learn more at Mike Blanchard & the Californios.
On July 12, Los Tres de Winters will present an evening of Norteño-style music, with accordion, bajo sexto, and bass. This lively music is a hybrid of Mexican and Spanish vocal traditions with waltzes and polkas brought to Mexico by Czech and German immigrants in the mid-nineteenth century. It evolved in the north of Mexico and is now a favorite style throughout the western U.S. Check them out on YouTube.
July 19 will bring Tango No.9, an all-star Bay Area ensemble devoted to tango from its earliest roots through modern tango nuevo and beyond. Since 1998, the group has delved deeply into the world of tango, performing tragic ballads and habanera rhythms at countless concerts and milongas, collaborating with many of the top dancers on the west coast, and recording two critically acclaimed albums. The series concludes on July 26 with Boca do Rio, a Brazilian-American samba-funk explosion. After a decade of performing in San Francisco’s live music scene, Boca do Rio has evolved into a multi-layered electro-funk party boat with a sound that is steeped in the sambas and choros that echo through the Brazilian favelas, while always evolving forward to create an organic sound that is decidedly modern and funky. Invite your friends and neighbors, bring a blanket or lawn chairs or sit on the grass, sip a cool drink, and enjoy some fine live music on a summer evening. The concerts are free, but donations will be gratefully accepted. Winters Friends of the Library will have delicious refreshments for sale, and all proceeds will support the Winters Library.
