Michael Hemken loved listening to stories since his first encounter with Captain Kangaroo back in the 50’s. He also loved reading, but it was slow going due to dyslexia. Mike started borrowing audio books from Winters Community Library when he was receiving radiation treatments. He always had a story on when he was resting or working in his wood shop. Those cd’s were kicked to the curb, however, once Mike discovered Libby e-books and audio books available through the Yolo County Library system.
Libby brightened Mike’s days and comforted him during medical treatments and Hospitalizations. He was amazed that the system never ran out of books to tempt him. I was absolutely sure I would never give up reading paper books to read in favor of reading on my phone or Kindle. I must confess Libby saved my sanity many times when I was stuck in my car without a book waiting for Mike outside Kaiser.
I have always been able to read myself out of tight spots with books, but Libby did me the great favor of offering me a staggering number of books and delivering my selections to my phone in seconds. I am grateful that this resource is available to me 24/7, no matter where I go.
How lucky are we to be able to enjoy this service during the pandemic!
