Big Day of Giving is a 24-hour online giving challenge that brings together the region’s nonprofit community to help raise much needed funds and shine a spotlight on the work nonprofits do to make the Sacramento region the place we call home. The Big Day of Giving is organized and hosted by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation and its affiliates.
Why is this day of fundraising so important?
Participating in Big Day of Giving gives our small, volunteer-run non-profit access to support and training beyond our own resources.
The Winters Friends of the Library(WFoL) collaborates with local business and groups to hold special events on this day to celebrate and showcase our programs, volunteers, and donors who support lifelong learning and the Winters Community Library. Participation in a regional event has allowed us to raise our visibility and to bring new skills back to our community.
WFoL raises critical dollars in this 24-hour period and builds new awareness and support for creating impactful opportunities to support our mission:
Winters Friends of the Library is a volunteer support group whose purpose is to promote literacy, foster a love of reading, enhance the cultural life of the community, and encourage involvement in the library and its programs.
Each year in the past three Big Day of Giving events our generous donors helped us meet and surpass our goals!
What is our goal for 2017? Play and Literacy – Building a Stage for Success
Our goal this year is to raise at least $30,000 for building the stage area of the City Park Playground.
Why? For the past 19 years the Winters Friends of the Library has sponsored the Winters Shakespeare Workshop, an excellent summer youth drama workshop.
This summer program has transformed many teens into Shakespeare and theatre arts advocates by providing many 13- 20 year olds a creative outlet and group of friends for the summer. Experience gained in these programs has also opened doors to further learning and career opportunities.
In addition, the performances are free to the public and often provide a first taste of live theatre and or Shakespeare to families in our community. Enriching cultural experiences benefit our whole community.
And where does this wonderful transformation take place?
At the wonderful stage at our wooden park on the corner of 4th and Main Streets!
At dusk, on two nights in July, people of all ages bring their blankets and chairs to fill the park and enjoy a magical evening of costumes, original music, dance, song and the eloquent words of the Bard in the park built by volunteers, including many of the current WFOL volunteers almost 30 Years Ago!
Yes, the park is due for a make-over and you can read more about the overall Project Playground here. We want to do our part to continue to weave together play and literacy in our community and build a stage for success!
When is Big Day of Giving?
The Big Day of Giving will take place during a 24-hour period on Thursday, May 4, 2017.
Starting at midnight, donations will be accepted through bigdayofgiving.org with a goal to inspire and unite our community in supporting hundreds of local nonprofits.
New this Year, individuals will be able to schedule their donations starting on Friday, April 14. Matching Donations and Grants can be secured offline before May 4 and used to encourage donations on May 4. Please contact us if you would like to consider funding a matching donation.
How Do You Donate?
- Starting Friday April 14, schedule a donation to be charged on May 4 at www.bigdayofgiving.org/wfol
- Starting at midnight May 4, donate online at https://www.bigdayofgiving.org/wfol
When donors use their Golden 1 Credit Union debit or credit card for their Big Day of Giving donation, their contribution goes even further. Golden 1 will proportionately match up to $50,000 to the nonprofits its members donate to online at bigdayofgiving.org on May 4.
Chance(s) to Win a Special Donor Thank you and Incentive
Each $25 donation to WFoL within the 24 hour period receives a virtual chance to win one of two baskets. If you donate $25 – you get one virtual raffle ticket. If you donate $100 – you have 4 chances to win. If you give $1000 – well, you can do the math!

Help Us Win Big for Winters!
Another benefit of participating in Big Day of Giving is the chance to win prize money and make your donation work harder. Donations made on May 4 are eligible to earn matching gifts and prize money. Matching gifts and prize money are not subject to transaction fees.
Prize Challenges in 2017
Hourly donor challenge – Every hour for 24 hours a nonprofit has a chance to win $1,000 by having the greatest number of donors during that hour.
Hourly donation challenge – Every hour for 24 hours a nonprofit has a chance to win $1,000 by having the highest amount of money raised during that hour.
Big Dog Boosters – Randomly throughout the day, donations will be boosted by amounts from $100 to $1,000. In total they will give away $50K this way.
One strategy that we know works is to give as early as possible, and then spread the word to encourage others to give.
Save the Date for WFoL Big Day of Giving Events on May 4
At this time we are planning to be at the Winters Community Library all day, at the Winters City Park after school and in the evening, and at the Berryessa Gap tasting room in downtown Winters from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. Donate, watch the leader board, and indulge in savory and sweet treats while sipping on a glass of your favorite Berryessa Gap wine. 10% of all wine sales will go directly to WFoL.
