What is Big Day of Giving?
Big Day of Giving is a 24-hour online giving challenge that brings together the region’s nonprofit community to help raise much needed funds and shine a spotlight on the work nonprofits do to make the Sacramento region the place we call home. The Big Day of Giving is organized and hosted by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation and its affiliates.
Why is this day of fundraising so important?
Participating in Big Day of Giving gives our small, volunteer-run non-profit access to support and training beyond our own resources.
The Winters Friends of the Library(WFoL) collaborates with local business and groups to hold special events on this day to celebrate and showcase our programs, volunteers, and donors who support lifelong learning and the Winters Community Library. Participation in a regional event has allowed us to raise our visibility and to bring new skills back to our community.
WFoL raises critical dollars in this 24-hour period and builds new awareness and support for creating impactful opportunities to support our mission:
Winters Friends of the Library is a volunteer support group whose purpose is to promote literacy, foster a love of reading, enhance the cultural life of the community, and encourage involvement in the library and its programs.
Each year we have particpated in the Big Day of Giving, our generous donors helped us meet and surpass our goals!
What is our goal for 2018? Opening Door to Opportunties
Our goal this year is to raise $20,000 to fund library support and a wide array of Winters Friends of the Library Programs.
Since 1985 the Winters Friends of the Library has met needs and creatively work to open doors for opportunities to serve all members of our community.
Sometimes that has literally meant keeping the doors of the library open and helping to build a new library with better and bigger doors.
Sometimes it mean opening doors to access technology, the actual computers and laptops, or the better broadband that can be accessed at the library when it’s open, and beyond library walls after hours. Have you seen the parking lot on evenings and weekends? For many people, free wifi access is crucial for their ability to apply for jobs, college, or access information they need to improve their lives.
Often it means opening doors to a love of reading and ways for people to have, hold, and enjoy books and book related activities.
Other times it means opening doors to new cultural and lifelong learning experiences that enrich the lives of people in our community and may spark a hobby or career opportunities.
Sometimes it means opening doors to volunteering opportunities that lead to learning, new friendships, and collaboration with other organizations and businesses in our community.
And often it means opening doors to creativity and transformation that results from bringing a community together to work and play on something bigger than themselves to make things better for future generations.
When is Big Day of Giving?
The Big Day of Giving will take place during a 24-hour period on Thursday, May 3, 2018.
Starting at midnight, donations will be accepted through bigdayofgiving.org with a goal to inspire and unite our community in supporting hundreds of local nonprofits.
Matching Donations and Grants can be secured offline before May 3 and used to encourage donations on May 3.

Starting on April 18, you may schedule a donation in advance to be charged in the first hour on May 3 at www.bigdayofgiving.org/wfol

Chance(s) to Win a Special Donor Thank you and Incentive
WFoL provides an additional incentive to those who donate to us on the Big Day of Giving. This year donors will have a chance to win a basket of goodies from WFoL and our community partners.
Each $25 donation to WFoL within the 24 hour period receives a virtual chance to win one of two baskets. If you donate $25 – you get one virtual raffle ticket. If you donate $100 – you have 4 chances to win. If you give $1000 – well, you can do the math!

Join us for a Donation Celebration at Berryessa Gap Tasting Room on May 3, 2018.
Join us at Berryessa Gap Tasting Room at 15 Main Street from 5-9 pm to sip, support, and share to encourage as many donations as possible. Donate and watch our place on the leaderboard, encourage others to donate, and be a part of the exciting evening WFoL Big Day headquarters and celebrate coming together to create more opportunities for everyone in our community. One strategy that we know works is to give as early as possible, and then spread the word to encourage others to give.

Another benefit of participating in Big Day of Giving is the chance to win prize money and make your donation work harder. Donations made on May 4 are eligible to earn matching gifts and prize money. Matching gifts and prize money are not subject to transaction fees.
Prize Challenges in 2018
Prize challenges are a fun and exciting way to boost your giving on May 3rd! There will be multiple opportunities to win additional dollars for nonprofits just by making a donation! Over $50,000 in prize dollars will be available for participating nonprofits. Please read the prize challenge rules below:
BDOG HOURLY DONATION CHALLENGE
A $500 prize will be awarded every hour on May 3rd to the participating nonprofit that raises the most money during that hour. A total of 24 prizes totaling $12,000 will be awarded. See rules below for restrictions.
BDOG HOURLY DONOR CHALLENGE
A $500 prize will be awarded every hour during on May 3rd to the participating nonprofit that has the most *unique donors during that hour. A total of 24 prizes totaling $12,000 will be awarded. *A unique donor is defined as one donation from one donor. See rules below for restrictions.
Need another reason to donate during Big Day of Giving? Here’s a BIG one: Make a donation with your credit card at bigdayofgiving.org and your donation could get a BOOST! We will randomly select donation(s) every hour on May 3rd and give them a BOOST by adding additional dollars! Boosts will range from $250 – $1,000. A total of $25,000 is up for grabs! See rules below for restrictions.
SPECIAL BLAST OFF BOOSTER PRIZE
To kick things off with a bang, we added a special BDOG booster prize! We will select a donation made within the first 10 minutes of Big Day of Giving and give that donation a $1,000 boost! All you have to do is receive a donation between 12:00 am and 12:10 am, and your organization could be the one to receive the Blast Off Booster Prize! See rules below for restrictions.
PRIZE CHALLENGE RULES
- Only gifts made with a credit card at bigdayofgiving.org on May 3rd are eligible to count toward prize challenges.
- Gifts made to organizations through donor advised funds, offline gifts entered, matching funds, and *scheduled gifts will reflect in your leaderboard totals, but do not count toward challenges. The only exception to this rule is that scheduled gifts are eligible for BDOG Booster prizes.
- A unique donor is defined as one donation from one donor.
- Organizations are eligible to win only one Hourly Donation Challenge and one Hourly Donor Challenge. Organizations may win both in the same hour or different hours, but can only win each challenge once.
- BDOG Booster Challenge winners are selected randomly every hour throughout the day and multiple BDOG Booster prizes may be given within a single hour. Organizations are only eligible to win one BDOG Booster challenge per hour. If an organization is randomly chosen and has already received a Booster prize within the hour, another donation will be selected at random.
- Prize challenge winners will be posted on the leaderboard tab titled “Prizes”. Additionally, prize winners will periodically be announced on the Big Day of Giving Facebook and Twitter accounts.
- Prize challenges are subject to change and all announced prizes are subject to verification. In the event of a tie, a prize will be split evenly among winners.
