Join the Yolo County Library’s annual Summer Reading Program from June 1 through August 15. Each of the eight library branches will celebrate this year’s theme, Read for the Win, by hosting programs that include reading incentives for children, teens and adults.
All participants who sign up for the Summer Reading Program in person at their local library branch or online will receive a ticket for prizes and a free gift. All participants who read five books will receive additional tickets for prize drawings generously donated by the various Friends of the Library groups and a book full of puzzles, games or coloring pages. Children ages 0-12 will also receive a free pizza coupon to Round Table Pizza. In addition, there will be plenty of opportunities to earn more tickets by completing further activities.
Participants can expect a wide variety of programs for all ages, from magic and animals, to science, technology and art. By providing summer reading programs, the Yolo County Library hopes to help children and teens retain and enhance their reading skills during the summer while providing a haven and community for readers.
“The summer reading program helps improve the reading skills of students, increase fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, and helps reduce the achievement gap,” said Yolo County Librarian Patty Wong. “Self-selection, access to and sharing of books are essential factors in reading motivation and are key elements of summer reading programs.”
In summer of 2015, more than 790,000 Californians signed up for a public library summer reading program and more than 1.4 million Californians attended summer reading events and activities. The Yolo County Library joins libraries across the nation and state of California to encourage adults, youth and families to read over the summer. The Summer Reading Program is a project of the California Library Association and part of California’s statewide summer reading outcomes.
The Summer Reading Program is free and sponsored by the various Friends of the Library groups and local donors.
